James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” is the follow-up to the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar,” which is still the highest-grossing film of all time. “The Way of Water” has become the No. 6 biggest movie of all time worldwide, with an estimated $1.928 billion worldwide through Jan. 18, 2023.

James Cameron has spent years developing and shooting the “Avatar” sequels, with photography for “The Way of Water” starting in 2017. Cameron has focused much of his energy on developing film-making technology that allows performance capture underwater.

“The Way of Water,” the 2022 sequel to “Avatar,” stars Kate Winslet as Pandora resident Ronal. It’s set over a decade later than the original movie. Watch the “Avatar: The Way of Water” trailer.

In Jan. 2021, Kate Winslet told Variety she had to learn how to free dive and breath-hold to play her role in Avatar 2. The first trailer for James Cameron’s sequel to 2009’s Avatar was finally released on May 9, 2022. Avatar: The Way of Water brings back stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver to the story of the Na’vi, a race of blueish extraterrestrials under attack from humans. New cast members include Winslet, Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords), and Edie Falco (The Sopranos). Watch the teaser trailer.

Zoe Saldana was cast as Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek film series in 2009 and Neytiri in the Avatar film series. She also portrays Gamora in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, beginning with Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Saldana has been in three of the five highest-grossing films of all time (Avatar, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame), which no other performer has ever achieved.

Disney bought the production company behind the original “Avatar” film and plans three sequels to “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Production on the third film in the series began in 2017 and is due for release in 2024. James Cameron is also working on fourth and fifth films (which he may not direct), projected to be released in 2026 and 2028.

In “Avatar: The Way of Water,” Jake and Neytiri are the proud parents of five children. One of these children is played by Sigourney Weaver, and the film focuses on the family dynamic as they navigate their new roles as parents.

James Cameron revealed in an interview that each of the remaining three “Avatar” sequels would feature a different narrator. Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, was the narrator in “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” For the upcoming and still-untitled “Avatar 3,” Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) will take over as narrator.

James Cameron says he intends to tweak “Avatar 3” based on the audience’s reaction to Avatar: The Way of Water. “The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.‘”, Cameron told the French TV show 20 Minutes about the next sequel. “I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.” Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau confirmed the return of tulkun hunter Mick Scoresby in Avatar 3.

“Avatar” was praised in 2009 for its groundbreaking visuals and environmental message. It focused on the importance of preserving the environment and respecting Indigenous cultures. It was also one of the first films made almost entirely through hyper-realistic motion capture technology. “Avatar” was nominated for nine Oscars and won three: Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography.

“Avatar” was briefly dethroned as the highest-grossing film of all time by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. However, a theatrical re-release helped “Avatar” reclaim its top spot. As of Jan. 8, 2023, “Avatar” is still the highest-grossing film of all time, with more than $2.8 billion worldwide earnings. Avatar: The Way of Water has become the highest-grossing overseas release of the pandemic era and the No. 5 title ever offshore, behind “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Titanic,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

By Jan. 22, 2023, James Cameron’s blockbuster sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” had grossed $2 billion worldwide. It overtook “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($1.91 billion) as the sixth-highest-grossing picture in box office history and the highest-grossing picture released during the pandemic. One of the most expensive films in history, the sequel cost roughly $460 million to produce and promote. Historically, only five pictures have crossed $2 billion: Avatar ($2.9 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion), Titanic ($2.2 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.069 billion), and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion).

In 2017, Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando dedicated an entire park area to the “Avatar” film’s fictional world of Pandora. The area, called Pandora: The World of Avatar, features rides, attractions, and experiences based on the film’s characters and locations.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” will run approximately three hours and ten minutes, nearly 30 minutes longer than the original “Avatar” from 2009. It opened in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022.
