2021 Golden Globes Super Quiz

The Los Angeles Times revealed that no Black members were in the 87-person voting body of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and that there hasn’t been one in at least twenty years. 

What’s new:

Within the first half-hour of the 2021 Golden Globes telecast, three members of the HFPA appeared on stage to pledge change. “We recognize we have our work to do,” said vice president Helen Hoehne. “We must have Black journalists in our organization.”

“Soul” is the first Pixar movie to have a Black character in the lead. 

Another fact:

It is also the first feature-length Pixar released as a Disney+ Original, without wide theatrical distribution. 

Barbra Streisand was the first female director to win the Golden Globe award – for “Yentl” in 1984.

New Fact:

The 2021 Golden Globes award for best picture drama went to Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” a Western set across economic recession and personal grief. Zhao became the first woman of Asian descent to win the best director. She’s also the second woman in the history of the Globes since Streisand to win the award. Until this year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated just five women in the category.

At the 2021 Golden Globes, Apple TV+ scored its first major award when Jason Sudeikis won the best actor in a comedy series for the streamer’s “Ted Lasso.”

Jason Sudeikis wore a rainbow tie-dye hoodie from his sister’s clothing line as he picked up the award. The sweatshirt, which retails for $110, whipped up buzz on social media, prompting Fey to joke after Sudeikis accepted his trophy: “If anybody wants to know where they can get Jason Sudeikis’ hoodie, go to nbc.com/globesfashion.” The page doesn’t exist.

Jane Fonda was arrested in the U.S. Capitol while peacefully protesting climate change in 2019.

New fact:

On Sunday’s Golden Globe Award ceremony, Feb. 28, 2021, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler presented Jane Fonda the Cecil B. DeMille award, which is given annually to an “individual who has made an incredible impact on the world of entertainment.” Fonda was one of the few honorees to accept an award in person at the ceremony in Beverly Hills, California.

Sacha Baron Cohen was the only actor to land two acting nominations in the 2021 Golden Globe Awards. He won the best actor in a comedy or musical award for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. He was nominated (but didn’t win) for best supporting actor for his performance in The Trial of the Chicago 7. The awards ceremony aired on Feb. 28.

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony was replaced in 2008 with a press conference due to writers’ threats of picketing the event as part of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike that year. That was the only year in which the Hollywood Foreign Press association canceled the ceremony. In 2020 Ricky Gervais hosted the show in an empty Beverly Hilton auditorium.

New fact:

Feb. 28, 2021, ceremony was the first to be held bicoastally, with Amy Pohler hosting in Beverly Hills and Tina Fey hosting from New York’s Rainbow Room. The 2021 Golden Globe Awards marks the duo’s fourth time hosting the show, after hosting it regularly between 2013 and 2015.
