Directed by Cate Shortland, the 2021 film Black Widow sees Johansson's character return to Eastern Europe to reunite with former spies she believed were her relatives. The film opened in cinemas on July 7, 2021, and two days later on Disney+.

The events 2021’s Black Widow depicts mostly happen between 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. This means the main character is well alive, kicking, and prepared for a sequel, or as its Australian director Cate Shortland put it, “I think these girls have got a lot of asses still to kick.”
