Famed novelist Salman Rushdie, 75, was born in Mumbai, India, on June 19, 1947. He was stabbed in the neck and abdomen in New York on Aug. 12, 2022, by a 24-year-old New Jersey man.

Why was Rushdie stabbed?

While police said the motive of the young stabber was unclear, Salman Rushdie had been living under a death sentence since Ayatollah Khomeini, the then Supreme Leader of Iran, issued a religious fatwa on Feb. 14, 1989, ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie. The reason: His novel “The Satanic Verses” fictionalized parts of the life of the Prophet Muhammad.

Jikji, a collection of Confucian teachings, was printed by a group of Korean monks in the ancient city of Cheongju in 1377. Jikji is the world’s oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type, predating the earliest Gutenberg Bible by 78 years. The only known copy of Jikji is in France, after being purchased in 1877 and eventually donated to France’s national library. It has not been on display for over 50 years.

The immortal jellyfish and the turritopsis nutricula (a type of hydra) are the only two biologically immortal animal species known to science.

How Come?

Scientists at the Spanish University of Oviedo mapped the genetic sequence of the immortal jellyfish, able to repeatedly revert to an immature stage after reproduction. The study, published on Aug. 29, 2022, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the immortal jellyfish genome may be better at copying and repairing DNA and maintaining the ends of chromosomes intact.

How is that different from human DNA?

In humans and other species, the ends of chromosomes become so short with age that the cell can no longer divide successfully and dies.
