On Sept. 11, 2001, four hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

The World Trade Center twin towers had 110 floors - more than any other building before the construction of the Burj Khalifa, which opened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2010. Chicago’s Sears tower tied in for 110 floors in 1974.

One World Trade Center, AKA Freedom Tower, is the tallest building in the United States, reaching a total height of 1,776 feet (541 m). Its height in feet is a deliberate reference to the year when the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. It is the 6th-tallest building in the world. Three other towers have been built on the WTC site, near cascading memorial waterfalls of the 9/11 attacks.

Rudolph (Rudy) Giuliani was New York City’s Mayor between January 1, 1994, and December 31, 2001. At the time of the 9/11 attacks, Oprah Winfrey called him “America’s Mayor,” while Time magazine declared him “Person of the Year” (pictured.) Twenty years later, New York state has suspended Giuliani’s law license amid his connections to Donald Trump.

The US wanted Saudi-born terrorist Osama bin Laden extradited before the 9/11 attacks for the 1998 bombing of two US embassies in East Africa that killed 224 people. The Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden to the US, saying he was “a good man and doesn’t want to harm anyone.”

Colin Powell was the US secretary of state in 2001. He then made a case before the United Nations for military action against Iraq, claiming that Saddam Hussein was building weapons of mass destruction. The United States and its allies waged war, an Iraqi court-ordered hangman killed Saddam, but the coalition forces found no such weapons. Powel left the Republican party after the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol.

The word “Islamophobia” had appeared only once in the New York Times before Sept. 11, 2001. Since then, it has been the focus of no less than 716 articles.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was named "the principal architect of the 9/11 attacks" in the 9/11 Commission Report,  is held by the United States at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. He confessed to involvement in nearly every major al-Qaida operation, including the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, the killing of journalist Daniel Pearl, the 9/11 attacks, and others. His trial date has been postponed repeatedly.

On Sep. 11, 2001, at 10:49 am ET, FOX News employed a 24-hour news ticker for the first time in the US (Sky News, also owned by Rupert Murdoch at the time, did the same - on the same day - in the UK). FOX News removed its on-screen ticker on Monday, Apr. 26, 2021.
