On May 9, 2022, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, the son of the late dictator of the Philippines, won a landslide victory in the presidential election. Marcos Jr. received nearly 30 million votes, more than double that of his closest rival. Marcos Jr., aged 64, will take office on 30 June for a single six-year term.

What happened under the first Marcos regime?

The first Marcos regime resulted in thousands of political tortures, arrests, and disappearances, and the family stole as much as $10bn (£8bn) from their country’s treasury. 1986 marked the Marcos family’s flight into exile.

Sunday, May 7, 2022, saw Jill Biden, the US first lady, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, and singer Bono of U2, visiting Ukraine on a day of public displays of international support.

What were they doing in Ukraine?

A few miles from the Slovakian border, Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska met with Biden in Uzhhorod, a town of 100,000 people. Trudeau and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky held a news conference in Kyiv. Bono visited the St. Andrew’s church in Bucha, where more than 100 bodies were unearthed after Russian troops withdrew late in March. On May 8, Bono and U2 bandmate The Edge gave a surprise concert at a bomb shelter subway station in the center of Kyiv.

Azovstal Iron and Steelworks is one of the largest steel companies in Ukraine. About 600 civilians and 2,000 Ukrainian fighters were trapped in the Mariupol steel mill for over 60 days during the destruction of the Ukrainian port town by Russian forces, beginning Feb. 24, 2022. The last civilians who found shelter in bunkers beneath the plant in ruined Mariupol arrived in Zaporizhzhia,  the first major city beyond the frontlines, on May 7.

US Census Bureau data released on Apr. 6, 2022, shows the median age of new mothers has risen to 30 from 27 three decades ago, the highest in history. Between ages 20 and 24, the fertility rate declined by almost 43%, and between 25 and 29, it dropped by more than 22%. Meanwhile, fertility rates increased by 67% for women aged 35-39 and 132% for 40-44. Based on the Census Bureau analysis of National Center for Health Statistics data, foreign-born new mothers have seen the most significant increases in median age, from 27 to 32.

The emperor is the world’s largest penguin and one of only two penguin species endemic to Antarctica. The emperor penguin is at severe risk of extinction in the next 30 to 40 years as a result of climate change, according to biologist Marcela Libertelli of the Argentine Antarctic Institute (IAA).

Rome health authorities have banned picnics and fenced-off trash bins to contain the wild boar population after detecting African swine fever in the body of a dead boar in the Insugherata nature reserve on May 5, 2022. About 50,000 pigs who live in and around Rome are at risk, according to estimates from Coldiretti, the farmers’ association. The animals often visit parks, walk down the road, or search for food in trash bins, mainly around the city’s north.

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, was dedicated on May 30, 2022, to honor the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (born in 1809 and assassinated in 1865). A segregated audience of 50,000 was present during the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial on Decoration Day (now known as Memorial Day) weekend. President Warren G. Harding addressed the crowd, as did other dignitaries.

What is the Lincoln Memorial Centennial Exhibition?

An art exhibit featuring over 50 multimedia works and artifacts inspired by the iconic seated Lincoln sculpture opened on May 7, 2022, at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. The exhibit runs in Stockbridge until Sept. 5 before moving to the Concord Museum from Sept. 22 until Feb. 26, 2023. Lincoln Memorial sculptor Daniel Chester French’s studio, Chesterwood, is located in the same Massachusetts town.

The 29-year-old star of Netflix’s hit “Sex Education,” Ncuti Gatwa, born in Rwanda, will become the first Black actor to play the lead role in the BBC’s “Doctor Who.” He is taking over from Jodie Whittaker, the first woman in the role, as the 14th incarnation of the Time Lord in Oct. 2022, the BBC announced on May 8, 2022. It’s worth mentioning that Jo Martin appeared as an unnumbered incarnation of The Doctor in three episodes in 2020 and 2021, making her the first non-white person to play the role. Doctor Who famously regenerates, allowing different actors to play the role since the series was first broadcast in 1963.

It seems everybody these days has publicly declared their position on the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine. We stand with Ukraine and its people, fighting against military forces attacking civilians.
