Moderna’s vaccine requires minus 20 Celsius, more like a regular freezer. If the FDA approves the vaccines, these will be the first mRNA-based medicines to reach the market. The mRNA molecules need low temperatures to stay stable.

Drugmaker AstraZeneca announced on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, that its experimental coronavirus vaccine has shown an average efficacy of 70% in large-scale trials. The vaccine, developed with the University of Oxford, showed 90% efficacy when it was mistakingly given as a half dose, followed by a full one a month later. The AstraZeneca vaccine can be stored, transported, and handled in normal refrigerated conditions for at least six months. It will also be cheaper than rival coronavirus vaccines from makers Pfizer and Moderna.
